Thank you for your interest in applying for the Truck Driver position with Australian Waste Management.

At Australian Waste Management we believe that effective communication is the key to success so we have put together a few helpful answers to some of the questions you may have about the available role.

Summarized Job Description:

To ensure that we provide our customers with the very best experience possible, we require drivers that have exceptional attention to detail, that pride themselves in going the extra mile, and want to succeed both personally and professionally. Our drivers are team players and have a “get it done” attitude.

You will be driving a rear load compactor truck. Your primary focus is successfully emptying either Paper and Cardboard, Commingled Recycling or General Waste bins. Bins range in size from 240 litre (2 wheeled bins) up to 1100 litre (4 wheeled bins). You will be required to wheel bins from their collection location (kerbside or otherwise as listed in special notes in the run application), to the rear of the compactor, empty them (ensuring nothing is left in them), and returning them to their collection location.

As part of your role you will be required to inspect bins whilst performing collections to ensure they are still safe, usable, and check that they have clean, readable stickers appropriately affixed neatly on them. You will also be expected to inspect your vehicle prior to and after each run, report any damage found, and ensure your vehicle is kept neat and tidy at all times.

Our role is not like most others. It allows for cross training in all different driving (and other) positions across the team. It may include some yard and warehouse duties such as preparing orders ready for delivery, filling in for other team members when off, providing feedback on runs where necessary, and even delivering and/or removing bins or other products to customers in some instances. There is certainly variety and the ability to “mix it up” for those who want it.

Are you Tech Savvy?

As we use a proprietary iPad based electronic run application and reporting system to make your life easier and automate things as much as possible, it’s best that you have some level of technological ability to allow for you to quickly and easily learn the system. As the application is developed in house, you have the ability to provide feedback and suggest changes and improvements ensuring that the run application is as user friendly and functional as possible.

Working Conditions:

As our new team member you will commence your 4 week initial trial as a Jockey (sometimes called a “Drivers Offsider”) with a trained specialist driver who will provide detailed, in depth training on all aspects of the role including how the electronic run application works, how to ensure successful collections for customers, how to effectively communicate with the office and how to provide the very best customer experience possible.

After a week of basic training focused on the essentials, you will swap roles with your training driver. From here you will commence a further week of training focusing on performing the driver role. In the third week, you will continue to perform the driver role, however you will only be assisted by your training driver when absolutely necessary. Your training driver will be there to observe and only assist if and when required. During the fourth week, you may be expected to complete runs on your own to allow a complete assessment of your abilities and the successfulness of your training.

After 4 weeks we will gather all feedback and confirm with you if you will permanently join our ever expanding team.

Please note that the 4 week trial period is subject to change, depending on performance, and should you fail to meet KPI’s and follow company policies within the trial period, Management has the right to end the trial early, or extend the trial should more training or a longer trial period be deemed suitable.

Payment:

As we strongly believe everyone should have the opportunity to control their own ability to earn, we have implemented a performance based pay structure that allows you to be paid extra for being an exceptional team member. So while the minimum pay rates are set for each role and stage of your journey with us, the maximum you earn is up to you!

The starting rate whilst on your trial period is staggered to reflect the responsibility of each level. All amounts mentioned are what is paid to you in your hand.

Whilst training as a Jockey/Drivers Offsider in your first week, the daily rate is $160 ($800 per week).

Whilst training as a Driver in your second and third week, the daily rate is $170 ($850 per week).

Whilst training as a Driver in your fourth week, or when completing runs solo, the daily rate is $180 ($900 per week).

Our pay week is Thursday to Wednesday, paid weekly every Thursday, in your hand, guaranteed. This ensures you have your pay before the weekend each week.

After completion of your trial period, you will be eligible for a bonus of up to $100 per week calculated from points earned (or lost) throughout the week based on your performance. This bonus is paid each Thursday with your regular pay and will include a summary outlining all the compliments and complaints received and tallied during that week, regardless of when the event occurred, to ensure you don’t miss out on any.

For ongoing exceptional performance, reliability and outcomes (team members that regularly achieve their full bonus each month), we are happy to discuss salary increases further, including cashing out any excess bonus points you may have accumulated.

We understand that to any other organisation you may be just a driver, but to Australian Waste Management you are so much more! You are the face of the company, our representative, the provider of solutions and outcomes to customers. Dedication and commitment are extremely valued and should you put in that little bit extra you will always be rewarded.

Work Schedule:

We have a 4 week rotating run schedule where each day sees you in a different area, with some areas crossing over on the same day each week, but most on the same day each fortnight. Some areas are only serviced once every 4 weeks. This provides a nice change in scenery, and removes the monotony associated with “bus driver” type roles.

Night Shift:

Night shift usually work a 4 night week (although you are paid for the full 5 days), Monday night through to Thursday night, usually with a starting time of 5pm. The run lengths do vary somewhat with an average of between 5 – 11 hours per night, but usually work out to between 28 – 40 hours per week depending on the week of the month. The night shift role is extremely popular among our team as it allows you to work through the night at your own pace (within reason) as long as all jobs are successfully completed. There is not much traffic to contend with at night, and if you are proficient and get through the runs in good time, it even gives you the possibility to get home early, go to bed while it’s still dark, and have the days available to do whatever you please.

Day Shift:

Day shift usually work a 5 day week, Monday through to Friday, usually with a starting time of 7am. The run lengths do vary somewhat with an average of between 6 – 10 hours per day, but usually work out to between 30 – 40 hours per week depending on the week of the month. The day shift role is equally popular among our team as it allows you to work normal day shift hours. As long as all jobs are successfully completed, once you speak to the yard supervisor and they say there are no other tasks that need to be completed (or assisted with) in or around the yard, you are free to go home, even if the run was only 6 hours long. You still get paid your full daily rate.

All Shifts:
We believe in the saying “what goes around comes around”, so although you may have a 5 or 6 hour day one day, you may have a 10 or 11 hour day the next, so you must take the good with the bad. Bonus points are always awarded for long or hard days, and for Day Shift, a paid day off may be provided on a Monday to make up for successive long or hard days, unless you prefer additional bonus points.

There may be times when you are required to help out the team and complete a run other than your normal shift, however this is always our last choice and very uncommon. We also respect minimum break times and fatigue management.
