Procedure 2: For Office Staff when a Customer Calls Regarding a Potentially Faulty Lock.
1) Confirm with the customer which type of lock they have on the bin, top or front? A top lock will have a chrome lock at the front middle section of the lid as per Figure 3 above. A front lock will have up to 4 screws at the front middle section of the lid instead and a chrome lock at the top front middle section of the bin itself as per Figure 4 & 5 above. ENSURE THE CUSTOMER IS USING THE CORRECT KEY. For all Green bins with Yellow lids, the key will have a “5” or “005” stamped on it. Other coloured bins may require other numbered keys but there shouldn’t be any of these in use any more.
If the bin will not lock:
2) Ask the customer to position the key in a North /South (straight up and down or front and back depending if it is a lid or front mounted lock) position and remove the key completely from the lock. This ensures the lock is in the locked position if the lock is functioning correctly.
3) Press firmly down on the lid at the position of the lock. Sometimes pressing on the lid mounted lock or tamper proof screw location directly with your thumb may be necessary. A click sound should be heard to indicate the bin lid has locked into position. If no click is heard and the lid remains unlocked, ensure the lock pin is lined up with the catch by looking through the document slot in the lid. The lid may need to be manipulated to ensure the pin lines up as the lid is closed. Try pressing firmly again.
